In Mr. Leard’s science classes, our students kicked off a new learning adventure with the SLAT method, and it’s been amazing to see them dive deep into inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking! 👏
We started by exploring the SLAT framework—using Agree/Disagree cards, Summarizing Thinking mats, and team roles to practice clear communication and argumentation. 💬💡 The big question of the day: “What animal makes the best pet and why?” 🐶🐱 Students worked together, voiced their opinions, and learned how to respectfully challenge each other's ideas.
Today, the focus shifted to team-building as students created their own team norms. They worked in groups to establish expectations around collaboration, active listening, and respectful dialogue. These norms will be key in creating a supportive and productive classroom environment as we dive deeper into the content this week. 👫🤝
By the end of the week, students will be using the SLAT method to tackle real content-based questions, putting everything they’ve learned into practice. 🚀 Stay tuned for more updates as they continue to grow their WICOR skills—Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading! 📚✨

Finally, any student can purchase a ticket to wear their Halloween costume to school that day (all costumes must be school appropriate). Costume tickets will be sold at the same time as dance tickets, $2 for a costume ticket. Please see the file attached for the Halloween dress up expectations.

School spirit is one of the things that makes Hobbs Middle School so special! Participating in events like the Homecoming Parade helps build pride, unity, and lifelong memories for our students.
If your student enjoys showing their school pride and getting involved, encourage them to consider joining one of our school spirit organizations next year — such as Band or SGA.
And a huge congratulations to our Student Government Association (SGA) for winning Most Creative Float at this year’s parade! Way to represent Hobbs Middle with pride and imagination!

WICOR in Action: ESOL & World Languages Collaboration
At Hobbs Middle School, 8th grade students can take Spanish 1 for high school credit through our broadcast classroom, taught by Mrs. Mahoney at Holley-Navarre Middle School and supported locally by Mrs. Mayes. For Hispanic Heritage Month, students used WICOR strategies—Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading—to research and present on inspiring Hispanic figures.
They collaborated with James, one of our ESOL students, who helped them practice in both English and Spanish, offering pronunciation tips and encouragement. This project showcased how WICOR connects students across programs and builds real-world communication skills!

Ms. Boling is the Hobbs Middle in-school suspension supervisor. In this vital role, she works daily with some of our most challenging students, providing the structure, guidance, and encouragement they need to reflect on their choices and grow. Her calm, positive demeanor turns difficult moments into opportunities for learning, and her ability to connect with students helps them feel supported while still holding them accountable.
Also, she’s just the most positive, kind person. If you’ve met Ms. Boling, you know—she’ll brighten your day. She treats everyone with respect and warmth, creating a welcoming environment for students, staff, and families alike.
Ms. Boling, thank you for all you do for Hobbs. Congratulations on this recognition, you’ve earned it!
💖 Help Keep Creativity Alive! 🎨
Jaguar business and community partners, we need your help! Our Crafting Club gives students a space to create, connect, and express themselves — a place where imagination and friendship come together. But creativity isn’t cheap! ✂️✨
Craft supplies like yarn, fabric, glue, and paint add up quickly. And with school budgets stretched thinner than ever, programs like Crafting Club — while deeply meaningful — are often the first to face cuts when funds run short.
That’s why we need your help. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps us provide the materials our students need to design, build, and imagine. Your support ensures that creativity continues to have a home at Hobbs Middle School.
🪡 Ways to Give:
• Checks: Payable to Hobbs Middle School (note “Crafting Club”)
• Cash: Directly to Mrs. Shackle, club sponsor
• Online: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/prdembd?ref=ZZHW3OJWSY0456G_ZZ68IACCDOSMMVK
Together, we can keep the arts — and creativity — thriving for our students. 💕

In Ms. Kratz’s 6th grade math class, students practiced multiplying and dividing fractions with a game of Battle MyMath Ship. Working in teams, they solved problems to score “Hits” or “Misses” and used peer error analysis to correct mistakes. Students had fun while strengthening critical math skills. The activity showcased WICOR strategies: Collaboration, as students worked together to solve and check problems; Inquiry, as they questioned errors and searched for better strategies; and Organization, as they tracked game play and structured their work for accuracy.

📸 Reminder: Tomorrow is Picture Day!
All students will have their photos taken for the yearbook. Order forms were already sent home with your student if you’d like to purchase pictures. If your student did not bring their form home, no worries—they can ask the photographers for one tomorrow.
If your student is absent, make-up picture day will be Friday, October 31st.
In Ms. Ratajczyk’s class, students explored geometric transformations through a WICOR-focused lesson. They began by writing about how shapes change under translations, reflections, and rotations, then inquired into the difference between rigid and non-rigid motions. Through collaboration at six hands-on stations, they matched vocabulary, plotted coordinates, and identified transformations, while organization and reading skills were reinforced as students used their notes to guide learning.

This week in Ms. Ridgeway’s class, students participated in a WICOR-focused activity designed to strengthen their critical reading and collaboration skills while analyzing the short story The Banana Tree. As part of this lesson, students worked in teams to complete a 3-2-1 Summary, which included:
• 3 examples of personification found in the story and how each helped create the mood,
• 2 connections between the text and the real world, and
• 1 sentence explaining the author’s use of symbolism.
After completing their summaries, students took part in a gallery walk, allowing them to view and reflect on the work of their classmates. This interactive component encouraged thoughtful discussion, peer feedback, and multiple perspectives on the text.

Hands-on learning in Mrs. Moore’s science class today! 🧪 Students created their own distance-time graphs by walking to set points, timing their partners, and counting strides. This activity put WICOR into action—collaborating with peers, organizing data, and writing about their results—all while making math and science concepts come to life!
